Giuliana February 2015

G's dream team

In November 2014, we received the devastating news that Giuliana, then 5 years old, had Stage III Burkitt's Lymphoma. The days, weeks and months that followed were excruciatingly painful and scary as Giuliana fought for her life. She underwent 5 extremely aggressive rounds of chemotherapy and spent 3 months almost entirely in the hospital. She suffered from many side effects of the treatment, including sepsis on more than one occasion, which were unbearable to watch her endure. When we received the amazing news that Giuliana's cancer was gone and that her next round of chemotherapy would be her last, we were filled with such relief and overwhelming gratitude towards the people that had gotten her through what we hope was the biggest challenge she will have to face in her lifetime. Giuliana quickly regained her strength and got back to her old life - riding her bike, hitting the playground and returning to school! On April 2, 2018, we got great results from Giuliana's scans marking THREE YEARS cancer free! We are so relieved and happy! On April 10th she turned 9 years old and in June she will finish up a great year in 3rd grade and loves playing in the neighborhood, dancing, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse! A "normal" day, with the 5 of us under one roof, is such an amazing blessing, and each day is such an incredible gift. We look forward to a long, healthy life for the bravest girl we know!

One in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 20 years old. Childhood cancer research is vastly and consistently underfunded and childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children. 2/3 of childhood cancer patients will have long lasting chronic conditions from treatment. With your help, Hope & Heroes can continue supporting the patients, programs, and research at the Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation at Columbia University Medical Center. The Division, located at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, is one of the largest and most distinguished centers for children with cancer and blood disorders in the country. They are depending on us to make sure their unique programs are available to all the children they treat and that their scientists keep working until they find a cure!!!

We are thrilled to be a part of the 9th Annual Hope & Heroes Walk on Sunday, May 20th, 2018 to support children with cancer and blood disorders and their families. Please give any amount that you can - or consider joining our team and walking with us. The Walk takes place at beautiful Pier 84 (West 44th St. at the Hudson River) and is an inspiring and fun day for the whole family. In 2015 and 2016, G's Dream Team was an enthusiastic group and we had a BLAST!

We thank you for all of your continued support, from the bottom of our hearts.

Peter, Megan, Giuliana, Lawson & Pierce
