I am walking in Hope and Heroes Children's Cancer Fund's Ninth Annual Walkathon on Sunday May 20, 2018 because my family has been deeply touched by childhood cancer. In the summer of 2008 our dear friend Sienna Cavallo, a classmate of Ella's, died from a form of bone cancer at the age of nine. She battled her cancer for over two years, enduring intensive treatment, experimental drugs, and mutliple surgeries including an amputation. Through it all, she and her family were incredibly courageous and generous. While receiving her treatment, Sienna and her family received tremendous support from Hope and Heroes, and became involved in fundraising. We want to continue this effort in her honor and memory.
In 2010, Ella's 5th Grade Girl Scout troop chose this fundraiser for their Bronze Award project and named the Children's School Team: Kids Against Cancer. We have walked every year since, and have been a Top Team for the past several years. This year we are not walking as Kids Against Cancer, but have decided to join forces with another team, Team Sienna, named after our dear friend. They are a Staten Island based team, and we wil act as the Brooklyn-side counterpart to this fabulous team.
Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of children - more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined. With your help, Hope & Heroes can continue supporting the exemplary care and cutting edge research conducted at the Herbert Irving Child & Adolescent Oncology Center (HICAOC) at Columbia University Medical Center. Their mission is profound in scope. They do not turn anyone in need away?and in the current climate of government, hospital and insurance funding, programs such as these cannot be sustained without ongoing philanthropy.
Please consider supporting Hope & Heroes Children's Cancer Fund by making a donation today. Your donation is tax-deductible and will truly make a difference in the lives of children. Thank you for your generosity.
