Julia Glade Bender, MD
I am the Associate Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Columbia University Medical Center and extremely proud of the life- saving work we do for children with cancer and blood diseases...BUT I still have a mission.
In this day and age, 80% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured. But that still leaves too many children for whom our standard therapies are NOT succeeding. For over a decade, I have served as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation Developmental (DVL) Therapeutics Program, which brings novel cancer therapies to children for whom standard treatments have failed. The DVL team offers a specialized brand of personalized care with lots of heart. We do this by offering clinical trials, so that we can advance the knowledge for all children who have been made to suffer these terrible diseases. Ours is the only program recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) the tri-state area, serving children referred from Connecticut, New Jersey, Westchester, Orange County, Long Island and the five boroughs of New York City. We are also the most active member of the Children's Oncology Group DVL consortium in the nation. Our program has expanded to include PIPseq, a personalized medicine initiative that uses the latest in next generation sequencing technologies to search for genetic drivers of cancer in an individual child's tumor. We hope that these genetic clues will direct us to potentially less toxic and more effective treatment strategies. Clinical trials studying novel approches to therapy are the only way we will ever reach the 100% cure rate we seek. We receive very little compensation from the NIH or pharmaceutical industry and are almost entirely supported by philanthropic dollars so we need your help.
