Team Giuliana!! #wewon
In November 2014, we received the devastating news that Giuliana, then 5 years old, had Stage III Burkitt's Lymphoma. The days, weeks and months that followed were excruciatingly painful and scary as Giuliana fought for her life. She underwent 5 extremely aggressive rounds of chemotherapy and spent 3 months almost entirely in the hospital. She suffered from many side effects of the treatment, including sepsis on more than one occasion, which were unbearable to watch her endure. The battle was brutal and one that no child should have to fight. When we received the amazing news that Giuliana's cancer was gone and that her next round of chemotherapy would be her last, we were filled with such relief and overwhelming gratitude towards the people that had gotten her through what we hope was the biggest challenge she will have to face in her lifetime. Giuliana regained her strength and got back to her old life - riding her bike, hitting the playground and returning to school! On April 23, 2019, we got great results from Giuliana's scans marking FOUR YEARS cancer free! On April 10th she turned 10 years old and in June she will finish up a great year in 4th grade. She is so driven in all areas of her life from academics to activities. Her favorites include soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, hip hop, chorus, flute and her running club with whom she’s run two 5Ks! A "normal" day, with the 5 of us under one roof, is such an amazing blessing, and each day is such an incredible gift. We look forward to a long, healthy life for the bravest girl we know!
One in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 20 years old. Childhood cancer research is vastly and consistently underfunded and childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children. 2/3 of childhood cancer patients will have long lasting chronic conditions from treatment. With your help, Hope & Heroes can continue supporting the patients, programs, and research at the Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation at Columbia University Medical Center. The Division, located at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, is one of the largest and most distinguished centers for children with cancer and blood disorders in the country. They are depending on us to make sure their unique programs are available to all the children they treat and that their scientists keep working until they find a cure!!!
We are thrilled to be a part of the 10th Annual Hope & Heroes Walk on Sunday, May 19th, 2019, at Pier 62/63 to support children with cancer and blood disorders and their families. Please give any amount that you can - or consider joining our team and walking with us. The Walk is a truly inspiring and fun day for the whole family. In 2015, 2016 and 2018 G's Dream Team was an enthusiastic group and we had a BLAST!
We thank you for all of your continued support, from the bottom of our hearts.
Peter, Megan, Giuliana, Lawson & Pierce
