Rebecca Zylber, Team Pediatric Cancer Trial Blazers
I am so thrilled to be walking again in the 10th Annual Hope & Heroes Walk on Sunday, May 19th, 2019, at Pier 62/63!
As many of you know, I am the Research Nurse Practitioner for our Pediatric Cancer Foundation Developmental Therapeutics Program (PCFDTP) at Columbia University Medical Center, where our goal is to bring novel treatments to pediatric oncology patients for whom standard therapy has failed. Over 75% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured, but that still leaves too many children for whom our standard therapies are NOT SUCCEEDING! Our program is the ONLY Children's Oncology Group/National Cancer Institute recognized site in the New York Tri-state area to offer early phase clinical trials of the newest drugs to children with cancer. We have over 30 clinical trials of new agents, and treat patients with a specialized brand of care with lots of heart. Clinical trials are the ONLY way we will ever reach the 100% cure rate we seek.
The PCFDTP also continues to deliver personalize genomics to all patients in the Tri-state area regardless of their ability to pay. Each child's tumor or malignant cells can be sequenced to discover the biological pathways that drive growth and metastasis. We can then use these findings to choose among a menu of drugs potentially capable of shutting down tumor growth pathways. The hope is that this strategy will guide treatment decisions and lead to more effective and less toxic drugs for individual patients.
Unfortunately tomorrow's advances require an investment today! Please donate and help make a difference in the lives of children with cancer. Or, consider joining the team and walking with us! It's an inspiring and fun day with incredible energy that brings together patients, survivors, families, friends, doctors, nurses, co-workers, and neighbors.
Thank you again!
